The Campomanes-Leon toll road manages to stay in service throughout the entire year, so that the once unpredictable route between Asturias and the Castilian Meseta is no longer the obstacle to travel it used to be.
It has seven double tunnels (total 17 km), several viaducts and a bridge spanning a reservoir. Of special geographical and sociological importance are the El Negrón tunnels, which cut through the mountain range of the same name that used to form an insurmountable barrier between Asturias and Leon.
Its viaducts are impressive feats of engineering and architecture. The Carlos Fernandez Casado suspension bridge crossing the Barrios de Luna reservoir is of particular beauty, but is also renowned amongst engineers for the novel techniques used in its construction.
